Thailand

Vogue Estates are pleased to add Thailand to our growing list of countries where we have overseas property for sale. This large and diverse country offers some of the best beaches in the world and a great mix of historical and cultural heritage which appeals to tourists for all over the world.

Geography

Located in South East Asia, Thailand features many miles of beautiful beaches on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Strait of Malacca; an area of water which is part of the Andaman Sea which in turn leads on to the Indian Ocean.

The country is divided into 5 geographic regions: The North, Isaan, Central, East and South. The capital and largest city of Thailand is Bangkok and this is situated in the Central Region. A popular city with travellers, this is a huge urban sprawl and on the surface doesn’t appear to have a lot going for it though actually Bangkok is a very likeable city and has many attractions, including the world’s largest reclining Buddha in the Wat Pho Temple.

In the Eastern Region are the closest and most popular beaches for visitors from Bangkok. The most famous beach is Pattaya, though this has suffered from over-development; however, if you’re looking for a location which has both the beach and the convenience of Bangkok then this is a good compromise.

Southern Thailand is the real beach destination with its extensive coasts and many islands. Phuket and Ko Samui are the most famous and most popular islands, whilst quieter and less developed islands such as Ko Tao also offer benefits such as great diving.

History

Prior to 1939, Thailand was known as Siam and was established as a kingdom originally in the 1200’s. It is the only South East Asian country never to have been under European control. In 1932 a constitutional monarchy was established and despite having had several dictatorships in the meantime, the country is now run as a monarchy with a parliamentary democracy.

The most recent government was overthrown in 2006 and because a new government has not yet been established the country is actually under martial law. Far from being as terrible as this sounds, there are very few restrictions in place and Thailand remains a safe country to visit.

Cuisine

Thai cuisine is known and loved throughout the world. There are great varieties of curries and stir fries, usually with strong flavours and spicy characteristics. Rice is the staple food and can be cooked in a multitude of ways, as can noodles. Salads are far from simple, and if you’re looking for something non-spicy, don’t choose a salad as they’ve usually had close contact with hot chillies!

Currency

Thailand’s currency is the Baht. One Baht contains 100 Satang and the most commonly used denominations are 25 and 50 satang and 1, 2, 5 and 10 Baht.

Language

Thailand’s official language is Thai, which has regional variations. English is widely taught in school, though it’s not widely used so should not be relied upon.
