Morocco

Morocco property is an emerging interest in the overseas property market as investors in particular are seeking new and relatively untapped markets away from the more saturated ones in countries such as Spain. Be amongst the first to buy property here and you can take advantage of some great prices and watch your investment grow.

Geography

Morocco is located on the north-eastern edge of Africa and its northern tip is just 8 miles away from the Spanish Mainland, separated by the Strait of Gibraltar. To the east and southeast it borders with Algeria and in the south with Western Sahara – a disputed territory. Much of the south east of the country is the Sahara Desert and as such uninhabitable, in fact the majority of the population lives on the other side of the dividing Atlas Mountains along the Atlantic coast. Morocco also has a Mediterranean coast and it is here, with the milder climate than on the Atlantic side, that much of its new tourism development is taking place.

Morocco’s capital city is Rabat, located on the Atlantic coast and the largest city and country’s principal port, further south, is Casablanca.

The climate is mostly Mediterranean and therefore temperate with warmer summers and cooler, but pleasant winters although there are extremes in the interior of the mountain regions.

Vogue Estates sells property in Morroco along the Mediterranean coast at this time, concentrating around the town of Tetouan. Development around this area includes new luxury beach resorts with all the possible tourist needs catered for including water sports, golf, outstanding restaurants, shops and marinas.

History

Morocco’s current population has been heavily influenced by the nations who conquered the country at various times throughout its history. The Arabs conquered in the 7th century, the Portuguese invaded in the 15th century and it later fell under both French and Spanish influence.

Morocco became a fully independent state in 1956 when the colonial powers withdrew their interests and the country now has a constitutional monarchy with a King who appoints the prime minister and cabinet.

Cuisine

Moroccan cuisine is an extremely diverse mixture of numerous different cultures including Arab, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Jewish.

Spices are used extensively and a commonly eaten and known dish is couscous. The main meat eaten is beef and although lamb is available it is not as common due to its cost. A popular meat dish is Tajin – which is a method of slow cooking meat. Seafood is becoming increasingly important in Moroccan cuisine and poultry has always been widespread. The most popular drink is green tea with mint.

Currency

The currency of Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham which consists of 100 Santim.

Language

Because of Morocco’s varied past, several languages are spoken here. The official language is Arabic, but French, Berber and Spanish are also widely spoken.
