Dominican Republic

Due to a somewhat troubled past, the Dominican Republic has not shared quite the same tourism growth as the majority of islands in the Caribbean. However that is now changing and tourism is one of the country’s fastest growing sectors, in fact in recent years, Dominican has now become one of the top Caribbean destinations. Real estate in Dominican is on the up and there has been much development in high quality resort areas. This is therefore an expanding market and a good time to be involved.

Geography

The Dominican Republic takes up the eastern half of the island of Hispaniola situated within the Caribbean. It has three mountain ranges and contains the highest peak in the Caribbean, named Pico Duarte and between two of the mountain ranges you’ll find the Cibao – a large, fertile valley. The country is also one of the largest in the Caribbean in terms of area. The capital city is Santo Domingo, located on the south coast.

The Dominican Republic has a maritime, tropical climate with year-round high average temperatures with little variation – the January average is 25C and the July average is 30C. This makes the Dominican Republic a popular destination all-year round. The highest rainfall occurs between May and November although this mainly affects the north western Atlantic coastline.

Property for sale in Dominican Republic is offered by Vogue Estates in Punta Cana, the eastern most tip of the island. Originally this was the name of the small village located there but has now become the generic name for the growing resort area which includes Juanillo, Punta Cana, Cabeza de Toro, Bavaro, El Cortecito, Mocao and Uvero Alto. Much development is taking place here to make this into a world-class resort with all the amenities you could possibly need, and then some!

History

Christopher Columbus discovered the island he named Hispaniola in 1492, claiming it for Spain. The city of Santo Domingo was built in 1496, becoming the first permanent European settlement in the ‘New World’, but with further conquests to be made on the South American mainland Spain’s interest in the island waned. French settlers moved into the western part of the island and in 1697 Spain decided to give up that part to the French, which is now called Haiti.

In 1795 Spain gave up the whole of the island to the French, and there then followed a backwards and forwards ownership tug-of-war between the two nations. Finally, a Republic was proclaimed in 1844. Still the country experienced problems, not least the dictatorship of Molina between 1930 –1961 which was followed by a civil war. The country now has a new constitution and is run in a US style democracy.

Cuisine

Due to the long involvement of Spain, food on the Dominican Republic has mainly Spanish influences with many traditional Spanish dishes being available, though usually with a slight twist to the ingredients. Unlike other countries in the region, food here is not heavily spiced. Seafood is readily available with the most popular fish being mahi-mahi, marlin, lobster or shrimp and meat, usually beef, tends to be stewed.

Currency

The Dominican Republic’s official currency is the Peso, each one divided into 100 centavos. However, in the tourism sector, services are usually happy to take the US Dollar or sometimes also the Euro.

Language

The official language of the Dominican Republic is Spanish.
